Etched stainless steel mesh: apertures, weaves and material grades

See the step-by-step detail and FAQ below. >Etched stainless steel mesh is made by chemically etching an aperture pattern into a sheet rather than by weaving or punching wire. The difference is not cosmetic. An etched mesh has a flat, square aperture with no burr and no wire thickness at the crossing, which means the open area and the flow coefficient are predictable across the whole panel.

That predictability is why etched mesh is specified in filtration and screening. A woven mesh has a characteristic that shifts with the wire diameter and the weave pitch, and a punched mesh has a burr and a deformed aperture. An etched mesh gives the same aperture geometry in every part of the panel, so the filtration or screening behaviour does not vary across it.

Material grade determines both the corrosion behaviour and the achievable aperture. 304 stainless suits general industrial and indoor applications, 316 adds resistance to chloride environments and is the usual choice for marine, food and pharmaceutical work, and 430 is used where a magnetic stainless is acceptable and corrosion resistance is less demanding.

Aperture size and sheet thickness are the two parameters that interact most. A deep, narrow aperture is harder to etch uniformly because the etchant cannot circulate freely at the bottom, so there is a practical limit on the ratio of aperture depth to width. We confirm the achievable minimum aperture against the material and thickness before production.

Panels are supplied in flat blanks, cut to the finished size, and can be supplied with a mounting frame or with the hole pattern for a folding or clamped installation. If the mesh forms part of a filter cartridge or a screen housing, tell us the housing dimensions so the blank is made to suit it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between etched mesh and woven wire mesh?

Woven mesh is made from intersecting wires, so the aperture is bounded by wire thickness and the crossing points are rounded. Etched mesh is dissolved out of a flat sheet, so the aperture is square with sharp edges, the open area is higher for the same nominal aperture, and there is no crossing point.

Which grade of stainless should be used for etched mesh?

304 for general industrial and indoor service, 316 where chloride exposure, cleaning chemicals or food and pharmaceutical contact make corrosion resistance important, and 430 where a magnetic stainless is acceptable and the environment is mild.

What aperture sizes are achievable?

The minimum aperture depends on the sheet thickness, because a deeper aperture is harder to etch uniformly. We confirm the achievable minimum for the material and thickness you specify rather than quoting a generic figure.

Can the mesh be supplied as a finished disc or frame?

Yes. We supply flat blanks cut to size, and can supply them with the hole pattern required for a folding or clamping installation. Tell us the finished dimensions and the fixing method so the blank is made to suit.
